In order not to hold up the circulation of the main file 54145 which I have already sent you, I am minuting to you separately on the point raised by Mr. Sloss at X in his letter to me of the 20th November, a copy of which I attach.

I think his proposal for a Secretary for the Advisory Committee probably arose out of the suggestion which was made in connection with the earlier pre-liberation plans for this Committee when it was thought that the appointment of a whole-time officer to draw up lists of books and equipment etc., was necessary. At that time we had not appreciated the extent of the damage to the buildings and it was hoped that the University could re-open on a limited basis during the period of the Military Administration.

You may think that the appointment of a Secretary now should await a recommendation to that effect by the Advisory Committee. In any case Mr. Boxer will presumably need leave and rest before he could be asked to take on this work.

Meanwhile would you very kindly comment on Mr. Sloss' proposal that he should himself undertake this work in the meanwhile if he can be given office accommodation here.
